Gas to Liquids

2006 has been a momentous year for the embryonic Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) industry, which now enables holders of natural gas reserves to convert them into clean high-performance fuels, ultra-pure petrochemical feedstocks, and base oil for high-spec lubricants.

In Qatar, the Oryx project has been completed, work has begun on Shell’s giant Pearl development, and ExxonMobil continues to pursue a project even larger than Shell’s. In Nigeria, the Escravos project is under construction. And new projects are under consideration in countries as diverse as Algeria, Trinidad & Tobago and Iran.

Together these multi-billion-dollar developments mark the transition of the GTL industry into a new commercial era. By around 2010, world GTL production capacity will amount to at least 200,000 barrels/day and perhaps as much as 300,000 barrels/day – with further rapid growth expected.

Not surprisingly, there has been a sudden surge of interest in this little-known but now-promising technology, as potential producers and customers come to terms with the opportunities and challenges that it presents.

This new workshop is designed to impart to participants a broad understanding of the GTL industry – including the critical success factors for project development, the complexities of marketing products to maximise return, and the effects of the changing political and regulatory environment. It will also give delegates an understanding of GTL’s position against LNG, given that the technologies will increasingly compete for access to gas reserves.
